How much does the Hamster Wheel of Life cost us?
We can track the years passing by as we are on the Hamster Wheel of Life.
We graduate from school, and go to university. We are in our early twenties. So much time left!
We apply for and land our first job. Excited for the next stage of our life and the things we will buy with the money.
We meet out partner, make plans to marry, buy a house and start a family (not always in this order)
We jump onto the Hamster Wheel. Thirty turns into Forty and then Fifty. We are busy working, raising kids and if we are lucky have a spare 30 minutes to ourselves (PS time going to the bathroom and showering does not count!)
Looking at the person in the mirror is a fifty year plus looking back and, according to the stats, if you are a male you have 28 years left and for females 31 years.
The Hamster Wheel of Life has taken 25 to 30 years of our life.
But that is not all.
It can also take money from us.
We had shares in Seven West Media (SWM) and back in 2000 SWM were blue chip shares which most retirees had in their portfolio; using the dividends as income. The newspaper industry was an industry impacted by the Internet which saw SWM slowly drop from $14.71 in 2008 down to $0.06 in April 2020.
And I didn’t even notice I was losing thousands. I was so busy on the Hamster Wheel.
A loss of $47,964 ; gone. A year’s wages. I know : it is a paper lost until they were sold but it is a lot to look at and will take years, if ever, to recover.
Be wary of the Hamster Wheel of Life : Stop, take time, think about the person selling us Manufactured Antiques. We need to get off the Hamster Wheel even for one day out of a month.
How is life being sold to you? Is it costing you in other areas of our lives?
The Hamster Wheel cost me my mental health and five years of not being present for my daughter and son’s life. But that is a story for another day.
